What they really want to know
To know you're ready and reliable now. Almost everyone has a gap at some point.
How to say it
- Say what the gap was, in one short sentence. You don't have to share private details.
- Mention anything you did or learned in that time, however small.
- Move forward: why you're ready now, and why this job.
For example
“I took eighteen months out to look after a family member. In that time I managed their appointments and the household budget, and I did an online Excel course. Things are settled now, and I'm ready to get back to work, which is why this admin role appeals to me.”
Use your own words and your own story. This is only a shape to follow.
Try to avoid
- Apologising again and again
- Long explanations or private medical details
- Blaming anyone
Practise it
Sam will ask: “I notice there's a gap in your CV. Can you tell me about that?”
