“They'll judge my accent or my grammar.”

What they really want to know

To understand you and to see you can communicate at work. Speaking another language is often a bonus.

How to say it

  1. Speak a little slower than feels natural and keep sentences short.
  2. It's fine to say “Could you repeat that?” or “Do you mean...?”
  3. Mention your other languages as a strength where it fits the job.

For example

“Sorry, could you say that again a little slower? ... Thank you. Yes: in my last job I often helped customers who spoke Polish, so the team came to me for that.”

Use your own words and your own story. This is only a shape to follow.

Try to avoid

  • Apologising for your English
  • Rushing to hide your accent
